The airport serves flights to and from several cities in Indonesia and neighbouring countries such as Malaysia and Singapore and some direct flights to Jakarta, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Medan, Batam, Bandung and others.
The airport also a Type B airbase of the TNI-AU, homebase of the 12th Squadron, a shelter to some Hawk Mk.109s and Mk.209s.
Sultan Syarif Kasim II International AirportIn early 2010, the 1st phase of the airport's expansion started with the construction of a new terminal to replace the 1980s built terminal; which will, by the time the new one opened, be demolished to make room for additional parking spaces. The new terminal will sport a modern design with three jetways and a larger apron.
By end of June 2011, a new terminal spanning 17,000 square meters and a more spacious aircraft apron which can accommodate 10 wide-body aircraft, twice the capacity of the old apron will be operated. To meet the technical requirements of a world-class airport, the airport runway would be extended from 2,200 meters to 2,600 meters and then to 3,000 meters and runway width extension from 30 m to 45 m. Expansion of the airport is part of infrastructure development in support of the 2012 Pekan Olahraga Nasional which was held in Pekanbaru.
On 16 July 2012, a Rp 2 trillion new terminal has been opened to accommodate 1.5 million passengers a year and serve 8 Boeing 737-900ER aircraft and 2 Boeing 747 jumbo jets at the same time. At the moment, the old terminal has been demolished to make way for a new apron. In addition, the new Air traffic control tower (ATC) at Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport is now being constructed as to assist the operation of the new airport terminal.

SSK II airport development will be initialized at June 2013 and is expected to be completed in 2014. It is planned upon completion to be 58,410 square meters apron and it would accommodate up to 13 Boeing 737-900 aircraft, but alternatively can serve also Boeing 747 aircraft. Things to do include the development of a parallel runway, runway to facilitate airplanes that land can be directly to the apron and it does not need to rotate the aircraft until the end of the runway.
