National Awakening Party
The story of PKB's establishment began on May 11, 1998, when the elders Kyai held a meeting at Pesantren Langitan. This discussion included demands for changes in order to save the Indonesian nation from destruction. As a result, the Kyai made an official statement to Pak Harto requesting that he step down from the presidency. Kyai members Muchid Muzadi of Jember and Gus Yusuf Muhammad were sent to deliver the letter and face Soeharto. When they went to Jakarta to ask for additional time, however, they were unable to schedule a meeting because Soeharto resigned on May 23, 1998, before receiving the letter.
On May 30, 1998, Kyai-kyai held a grand Istighosah in East Java. There, all the Kyai gathered in the office of East Java PWNU. All Kyai members who attended the meeting urged KH Cholil Bisri to form a party with NU's political aspirations. He refused because he didn't want to be too involved in politics and felt more comfortable in the world of boarding schools only. However, Kyai members continued to push him, as he was considered more politically experienced. At that time, Gus Dur didn't participate in this gniteem.
On June 6, 1998, KH Cholil Bisri invited 20 religious scholars â€"Kyai- for a discussion. Invitations were sent only via phone. On the day, more than 200 religious scholars â€"Kyai- attended the meeting. At the meeting, Bisri's home in Leteh, Rembang, Central Java was full. During the meeting, a committee called the "Standing Committee" consisting of 11 people was formed. Cholil Bisri himself became the chairman of the "Standing Committee", and the secretary was Gus Yus. This committee worked in a marathon session to prepare a platform and party components including logos, which then became the official symbol of the party, created by KH.A. Mustofa Bisri. The formed Lajnah Assistance Team which consisted of 14 people, chaired by Matori Abdul Djalil and secretary Asnan Mulatif.
On June 18, 1998, the committee held a meeting with NU and continued the hearings with political figures in Golkar, PDI and the PPP. The committee offered them to join without coercion. NU himself refused to establish a party.
On July 4, 1998, the 'Standing Committee' and an NU team held a major conference in Bandung, inviting the entire PWNU in Indonesia, which was attended by 27 representatives. On that day, the party’s name was chosen. The proposed names were the National Awakening Party, the Party Kebangkitan Nahdlatul Ummah and Ummah Party. Finally, the chosen name was PKB. They then determined who should be party’s declaratory. They agreed that the party was declared by 72 people, according to the age of the NU organization, the number consisted; Standing Committee Team (11),Lajnah Assistance Team (14), Team NU (5), NU Assistance Team (7), and Regional Representatives (27 x 2). They also put their signature on the Party’s Platform and its components.
However, the PBNU decided that only 5 people, not 72 people, could became the party’s declaratory. The five people were; Kyai Munasir Allahilham, Kyai Eliyas Ruhyat, Kyai Muchid Muzadi, KH. A. Mustofa Bisri and KH. Abddurahman Wahid, who was the chairman of the PBNU. All 72 names of the party’s declaratory were erased by the PBNU.
The party's base of support is strongest in the rural areas of Java and draws from the constituency that formerly supported the conservative Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama. The PKB differs substantially from Nahdlatul Ulama, though, in that while it supports a role for Islam in government, it does not share the older organization's support for an explicitly Islamic republic.
The National Awakening Party stood in the 1999 elections, winning 13 percent of the vote. In 2004 elections the party gained 10.57% of votes and 52 seats in the People's Representative Council. The party won 4.9 percent of the vote in the 2009 legislative election, and 27 seats in the legislature.
