Guruh Sukarnoputra
Muhammad Guruh Irianto Sukarnoputra, also known as Guruh Soekarno Putra, is a prominent figure in Indonesian politics and arts. He was born as the youngest son of Indonesia's first president, Sukarno, and his third wife, Fatmawati. After completing his elementary and high school education in Jakarta, Guruh pursued his higher education at the Archeology Faculty of the University of Amsterdam, where he graduated in 1976.
Despite being born into a political family, Guruh chose a career in the arts rather than following in the footsteps of his sister, Megawati Sukarnoputri, who became a prominent political figure in Indonesia. He has produced over one hundred choreographic works and written popular Indonesian songs, establishing himself as a successful artist in the country's cultural scene.
In recognition of his contributions to the arts, Guruh was awarded the Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1991. He also collaborated with prominent Indonesian musician Chrisye on the album "Guruh Gipsy" in 1977, showcasing his musical talents.
Guruh's contributions to both the arts and politics have made him a unique figure in Indonesian society. Despite his success as an artist, he has also dedicated himself to public service and has been a member of Indonesia's People's Representative Council for several terms.
Guruh's involvement in politics began in 1992 when he became a member of the People's Representative Council, representing the Indonesian Democratic Party. When the party split in 1996, he joined the breakaway Indonesian Democratic Party รข" Struggle, and was re-elected under the party's banner in both the 1999 and 2004 Indonesian legislative elections. Currently, he represents the regency of Blitar in East Java.
Despite his political career, Guruh has never abandoned his artistic pursuits. He has continued to produce and perform choreographic works and even applied his creative talents to produce the opening ceremony of the 2000 Indonesian National Games in Surabaya.
Guruh's diverse background and contributions to both the cultural and political spheres of Indonesia have made him a highly respected and influential figure. He has received numerous accolades for his work, including the Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government in 1991, and his legacy as a talented artist and dedicated public servant continues to inspire Indonesians today.
