Gadjah Mada University is an Indonesian public research university located in Yogyakarta, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It was officially founded on 19 December 1949, three years after the 1st lecture was given on 13 March 1946. It is considered to be one of most prestigious universities in Indonesia. The university is heralded as the oldest and largest institution of higher learning in Indonesia. Comprised of 18 faculties and 28 Research centers, Gadjah Mada offers 68 undergraduate study programs, 23 diploma study programs, and 67 graduate programs ranging from Social Sciences to Engineering. Enrolling approximately 157,000 students, the school staffs 2,240 employees, nearly 2,300 lecturers, and maintains a campus of 882 acres with facilities including a stadium and a gymnasium.
Gadjah Mada is implementing an 'educopolis' area, a step taken by university in creating conducive environment for the continuity of the learning process. These efforts are pursued in the context of developing multidisciplinary collaborations and responding to ecological issues in order to achieve the vision of the university. Some of the steps are reducing pollution and vehicle exhaust emissions, development of pedestrian areas, restriction of vehicles entering the campus; construction of new dormitories on the campus, development of parking pockets; planting trees and much more.
The rays of the sun and the golden kartika represent UGM's standing as a Pancasila University; an Indonesian national science and cultural center for higher education founded on Pancasila that promotes science, reality, loftiness, and righteousness.
The center of the Symbol is a surya binolong. The word surya (sun) symbolizes "one" while the word binolong symbolizes "nine", and each ray of the sun consists of nineteen beams. Hence "19" was the date on which the University was founded.
Surrounding the hole, at the center of the sun, are two circles arranged as twin suns inside the five rays that constitute the kartika. The kartika symbolizes "one" while the twin suns symbolize "two", hence "12", December, the month in which the University was founded.
The five songkoks and five spears reflect the University' s struggle and the heroic nature that keeps the University prepared and alert. All the songkoks and spears are penetrated and absorbed by Pancasila; this reflects the nature of the University as a monument to the national struggle.
The white colour represents holiness and purity. That the golden colour surrounds the white colour symbolizes a sengkalan memet; a concept that implicitly concludes the relationship between the white colour and the golden colour. The concept reads "murnining suci margining kanyatan". The word murni symbolizes "nine", suci "four", marga "nine", kanyatan "one"; hence from the back they read "1949", the year in which the University was founded.
UGM was the 1st state university in the Indonesia. First-time established as Universiteit Negeri Gadjah Mada when the age of the Republic of Indonesia was just 3 years old and when the Netherlands wanted to regain control of the Republic. At that time, the capital of the Republic of Indonesia had moved from Jakarta to Jogjakarta.
In conditions like this, UNGM was established through Government Regulation No. 23 of 1949 regarding the Merger Colleges to a University. Despite these regulations dated 16 December 1949, the UNGM's inauguration took place on 19 December 1949. The 19th of December was intentionally chosen to eliminate the grief caused by the invasion of the city of Yogyakarta; a year to that date previously. In addition to this, it was to show the world that exactly a year after the Netherlands returned to Indonesia (December 19, 1948), the Government of Indonesia would be able to establish a nationwide university.
When founded, UGM had 6 faculties: the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy, the Faculty of Law, Social and Political Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Letters, Pedagogy and Philosophy, the Faculty of Agriculture, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
From 1952 until 1972, the Faculty of Medicine was split into two faculties, the Surabaya branch of the Faculty of Law, Social, and Political Sciences was established, and the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training was integrated into IKIP Yogyakarta.
During its initial years the university used the buildings and other facilities belonging to the Kraton of Yogyakarta. UGM gradually established a campus of its own in Bulaksumur on the northern side of Yogyakarta. The university now occupies an area of three square kilometres.
The rector of the university is Professor Pratikno, a political scientist, elected on 22 March 2012 for a five year term ending in 2017.
UGM has long been known by the public as a university with a strong tradition in serving the nation and state. UGM thoughts were known to excel on the world stage in synergy-based solutions offering cutting-edge science with local knowledge on any problems of the nation and humanity. This tradition is embodied by all components of the university through scientific development that holds fast to the values of the UGM's and strongly orientates on populist issues, multiculturalism, and the notion of lifelong learning.
UGM main building is centered at Bulaksumur, Yogyakarta 55281. On the surroundings, UGM has Grha Sabha Pramana - a huge building utilized for graduation ceremony, a university library, a sports center consisting of a stadium, tennis court, and basketball field.
UGM administration is divided to 18 faculties, offering study programs from undergraduate to doctorate level. It hosts an integrated graduate school that manages study programs outside those offered by the 18 faculties and one vocational school offering practical-oriented study programs.
In 1988, UGM opened a master study of management, specially designed for business practices. The school is a collaboration with the University of Kentucky and Temple University.
UGM's School of Medicine is one of the oldest medical schools in Indonesia, established on 5 March 1946. It is ranked number 72 on the Times Higher Education Supplement 2006 for biomedicine. In the past decade it has been the top medical school in Indonesia.
Starting in 2002, UGM began offering an English-language based medicine program for overseas and Indonesian students to study medicine with an international standard curriculum. The International Medicine Programme is five years long with the 1st three and a half years being study and a further one and a half years of clinical rotations. The program is designed around the problem based learning approach; making use of small study groups.
CSIUP began in the 2012 academic year. It offers undergraduate computer science classes in English. Its strength lies in algorithm and software design, intelligent systems, programmable logic and embedded systems, and mobile computing. Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has been delivering Computer Science courses since 1987, 2000 (M.Sc), and 2003 (Ph.D) organized jointly by the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Physics, which has also offered courses in Electronics and Instrumentation since 1987. In 2010, the Department of Computer Science and Electronics (DCSE) was formed by merging Computer Science resources within the Department of Mathematics and that of Electronics and Instrumentation group within the Department of Physics. Students of DCSE have consistently won gold medals in robotics competition both nationally and internationally (in Korea 2012 with the humanoid robot, and the USA 2013 with its legged robot).
UGM also facilitates itself with Integrated Research and Testing Laboratory which is the universityâ™s central laboratory.
As a contribution to society, UGM organizes a community service called KKN-PPM. It is a must for undergraduate students to attend KKN since itâ™s one of requirements to graduate from a Bachelor's degree. KKN-PPM is a research based community service held three times in an academic year: in the middle of both odd semester and even semester and between those two semesters. Not only local students joining the KKN but also international academicians including lecturers and students get involved regularly in KKN-PPM UGM. In 2011, 150 international students participated in KKN-PPM coming many countries such as South Korea, Australia, France, USA, Norway.
The Sports Activities Unit is coordinated by the Secretariat of the Joint Sports, and the Arts Unit is coordinated by the Joint Secretariat of Arts.
