Minangkabau International Airport

Minangkabau International Airport

There is a plan to lengthen the runway by 250 m to be compatible with Boeing 747, Airbus A340 planes, and also to connect the airport to the city of Padang with a train service. The terminal expansion is already announced and the rendering is already released in Angkasa Pura 2 website.
There are a number of flights serving the routes from and to Minangkabau International Airport, similar to the former Tabing Airport. These routes help to connect Padang to Jakarta, Medan, Batam and Pekanbaru domestically; whereas international routes connect it to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Currently there are ten national airlines and two foreign airlines operating at Minangkabau International Airport. The Airport can accommodate wide-body aircraft like Airbus A330 or MD 11 and upon completion of the all the facilities in the future, it would have better facilities for passengers and operators as compared with the former Tabing Airport.
Minangkabau International Airport is the 2nd airport in Indonesia, after Soekarno-Hatta Airport at Cengkareng, to be constructed from scratch. According to the Airport's Masterplan, this airport would be built in three phases; phase two would begin in 2010. When all phases have been completed, a long runway extended up to 3,600 m would be in place. It will also be equipped with a parallel taxiway along the runway. Other constructions include supporting facilities and main passenger terminal building. Given current favorable growth, the number of passengers has reached 1.3 million per year, already more than double the previous target of 622,000 passengers per year to be met by 2010. There is an obvious need for Minangkabau International Airport to be developed and the services to be up-graded as soon as possible in order to accommodate an increasing number of passengers and goods in the future.
The facilities are adequate for a regional provincial airport. There is ample parking space, a range of stores selling various goods, and check-in arrangements are generally quite efficient. However the departure lounge can get quite crowded at times and indeed crowding seems likely to become more of a problem in view of the rapid growth in passenger numbers taking place at present (2011) in Indonesia. Many international tourists would find the toilet facilities somewhat unsatisfactory.
Minangkabau International Airport has no records of any accidents or incidents at all. But this airport suffered minor damage because of a earthquake in September 2009.
